EE puts unsigned band on global stage with first 4G-powered 360° YouTube live stream from Latitude festival

  • EE delivered a UK festival first at Latitude by streaming Glasgow band White’s Saturday afternoon performance in 360° over the 4G network
  • World’s first network to use 4G for seamless, unrestricted 360° streaming of the band’s must-see set to fans across the globe via YouTube
  • EE installed its award-winning 4G network at Latitude for the first time and connected the Latitude app as it became official technology partner of the festival
  • Highlights of the live 360° content can be viewed here

EE, the UK’s biggest and fastest mobile network, live-streamed 360o video of Glasgow five-piece, White, using its superfast 4G network from Latitude music festival. The live stream, which was delivered on YouTube Live in 360°, meant the band could reach an unrestricted global audience with their debut Latitude performance in Suffolk.

As the new official technology partner of the festival, EE installed its award-winning 4G network on-site for the event - which takes place in rural Henham Park - to ensure visitors could stay connected, share selfies and upload video and create this ground-breaking 360° streaming experience.

Hamish Fingland, guitarist of White said: “We were really psyched to get the chance to take part in this 360° stream with EE as the new technology means we are able to connect with more fans and reach a wider audience which is especially important when we’re just starting to kick off. We’re all from Glasgow, but travel a lot when we’re touring and the thought of pals, family and fans tuning in and feeling like they were actually there is pretty great!”

Mat Sears, communications director, EE, said: “Most festivals take place in remote, less populated places so don't necessarily have the best network infrastructure in place. We've partnered with Latitude for the first time this year to install our superfast 4G network on-site and, while it was mainly used by our customers for sharing selfies and video, we thought we'd put it to the ultimate test by trialling live 360° streaming video. It’s still a new technology and requires huge amounts of bandwidth for the upload, but we’re always looking for new ways to demonstrate the power of our network. We hope after today's success, and thanks to a brilliant set from White, we will be able to host a lot more content like this over our network bringing more fans closer to the action at live events.”

EE also connected the official Latitude mobile app for the first time meaning that app users on-site could receive regular geo-fenced based notifications dependent not only on their location, but also their activity history at the festival. Through the app, ground-breaking connectivity technology processed hundreds of real-time GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi observations every second to recommend specific events and activities, as well as reminding them of special performances to look out for and scheduling updates.

The exclusive live stream of White’s Latitude festival performance was beamed out on YouTube during their Saturday afternoon set.
