EE brings 300 new customer service jobs to Londonderry / Derry

  • EE selects NI as first location for UK-wide jobs drive that will see over 1,000 customer service roles created in the UK over the next 24 months
  • New roles reinforce EE’s commitment to deliver industry-leading standards of customer service

EE, the UK’s most advanced digital communications company, has today revealed Londonderry/Derry in Northern Ireland as the location of its new UK customer service centre. The new site will be managed by Convergys, and is set to open in late Spring with recruitment for the new roles to begin shortly.

In February this year EE set out plans for a jobs drive that will see over 1,000 customer service jobs brought back to the UK from overseas call centres. The opening of the new customer service centre in Northern Ireland marks the first stage of EE’s commitment to deliver industry leading customer service, and will provide a major boost for employment in Northern Ireland.

The location of the remaining roles for the UK will be announced in due course.

Olaf Swantee, EE CEO, said

“EE has delivered the UK’s biggest, fastest and most reliable mobile network. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved and I am now determined that within 18 months, I will be able to say that EE has done for customer service in the UK what it has done for networks.

“Returning over 1,000 customer jobs to the UK from overseas call centres is a significant part of the strategy to achieve this goal. That’s why I am delighted to announce the opening of our new customer service centre in Northern Ireland.  This is great news for both job seekers in Londonderry/Derry and our customers across the UK.”

Mark Durkan MP for Foyle

“I very much welcome EE’s decision to open their new customer service centre and create 300 jobs in the City of Derry.  The endorsement of the City of Derry by the UKs’ leading digital communications company is a great endorsement for the City’s workforce, and I look forward to visiting the centre when it is open.”

Arlene Foster MLA, Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Investment

“Following the Invest in NI conference chaired by the Prime Minister and the First Minister last autumn I am delighted that EE, along with their partner Convergys, have today announced that they will be opening their newest customer service centre in Londonderry and bringing 300 jobs to Northern Ireland.  This shows that Northern Ireland workforce can compete and win on the quality of service they offer.”

Convergys Chief Commercial Officer Mike Wooden said: “By combining our extensive experience supporting many of the world’s top telecommunications companies with the highly skilled and talented workforce in this region we can create a delivery centre that will generate meaningful benefits for Convergys clients, and more importantly, extensive career opportunities for the local workforce.”

At the same time, following the success of EE’s apprenticeship scheme, EE plans to nearly triple the size of the programme offering opportunities to more than 1,300 young people by the end of 2015. To date, 80% of the 500 EE apprentices who have completed the programme have been recruited. EE plans to continue to offer full time positions to the majority of the apprentices, many of whom are in areas of high unemployment.
