EE has teamed up with TV and radio star Vernon Kay to give him a helping hand as he’s left in charge to prep Christmas in the family home, highlighting how its latest WiFi 7 technology keeps the Kay household running smoothly during the holiday hustle.
In new behind-the-scenes footage, super host Vernon and his daughter Phoebe showcase how tech, powered by EE’s WiFi 7, keeps Christmas hosting stress-free. From entertaining guests and streaming holiday classics to online shopping and staying on top of work, even the family dog, Mickey, charms as an impromptu festive tour guide.
Why Wi-Fi Matters This Christmas
According to EE’s latest research for the launch of WiFi 7, the demand for superfast Wi-Fi at Christmas has never been higher, with households set to unwrap an average of three connected devices such as mobile phones, gaming consoles, or tablets, and nearly a third (31%) of Brits spending up to 2 hours online during Christmas Day testing out their new electronic goods.
EE is even anticipating a spike in wi-fi network activity peak over the period, with Boxing Day expected to see the biggest single day of demand for home wi-fi usage over the Christmas period, due to software downloads for new consoles and handsets, festive football streaming and Brits spending extra time on their new connected devices.
Moreover, research suggests that we’re dreaming of a strong connection this Christmas as a quarter (25%) of Brits even say they’ve experienced “broadband envy” at a relative’s home after seeing their faster Wi-Fi in action and nearly 1 in 5 (19%) have cut visits short due to inadequate Wi-Fi.
Helping Brits Host with Confidence
With over a third of Brits (37%) feeling daunted by the prospect of hosting during the holidays, Vernon’s inside look into his new WiFi 7-powered home highlights how technology can transform Christmas chaos into calm.
From seamless gaming to uninterrupted streaming for guests, the Kay household demonstrates how reliable broadband can save the day, as families prepare to welcome on average 5 guests during the season, who all bring different demands on household Wi-Fi.
Research from EE also uncovered the nation’s following connected Christmas habits:
- 21% of adults confess to using Wi-Fi strength as a deciding factor when choosing which relative’s home to visit for Christmas
- 18% of Brits reveal they used AI apps such as Chat GPT, Google Gemini and Galaxy AI to recommend gift ideas for their friends and family this year
- 29% of Brits depend on online recipes on Christmas day, with poor connectivity cited as a recipe for disaster
- 23% of Brits admit that they rely on online video guides to learn how to wrap presents properly
- 44% of Brits plan to stream a Christmas blockbuster movie or boxset series on Christmas day as they look to get their festive fix
- 30% of Brits build a family Christmas playlist together designed to keep the whole household happy
The host with the most, Vernon Kay, comments: "Christmas hosting is no small feat, but with EE’s upgrade, the stress melts away and makes everything just work better," says Vernon. "It’s all about staying connected - to family, to fun, and to the things that make Christmas magical."
Luciano Oliveira, Director of Home and TV, EE said: “Countless families across the country will be facing the same hosting challenges as Vernon over the coming weeks. Switching to EE’s WiFi 7 Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro can truly give the busiest of homes a helping hand over the festive period.
