Tom Holland wins the EE Rising Star Award at the 2017 EE British Academy Awards

  • The Spider Man actor tops the public vote
  • The EE Rising Star Award is the only one at the EE British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the public
  • The 2017 nominees were: Laia Costa, Lucas Hedges, Ruth Negga and Anya Taylor-Joy
  • Fellow BAFTA nominee, Viola Davis presented this year’s award

EE is proud to announce Tom Holland as the winner of the EE Rising Star Award in 2017.

The EE Rising Star Award is the only publicly-voted award presented at the EE British Academy Film Awards, and it continues to be a hotly contested accolade for up and coming acting talent. Tom Holland was one of five international actors nominated for their incredible talent and recognised as a true star in the making. The other nominees were: Laia Costa, Lucas Hedges, Ruth Negga and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Tom holland, is best known for his role as the iconic Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Holland starred in Captain America: Civil War alongside Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans and has recently finished filming for Spider-Man: Homecoming where he appears opposite Michael Keaton. Holland made his screen debut opposite Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts in Juan Antonio Bayona's The Impossible. 2017 spells another busy year as Holland features in James Gray’s The Lost City of Z with Robert Pattinson and begins shooting for The Current War opposite the acclaimed Benedict Cumberbatch.

Fellow BAFTA winner Viola Davis who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences, took to the Royal Albert Hall stage to present this year’s EE Rising Star award.

The EE Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen's most memorable characters.

The jury who selected the five nominees from the hundreds suggested by BAFTA members included actress previous EE Rising Star Award winner Will Poulter, presenter and film fan Edith Bowman and a host of leading industry experts including producer and jury chair, Marc Samuelson; film critic James King; This is England producer, Mark Herbert; Cinderella, Pirates of the Caribbean and Testament of Youth casting director, Lucy Bevan; The Lobster producer Lee Magiday, director of Our Kind Of Traitor, Susanna White, and renowned casting director for The Boy In Striped Pyjamas, Philomena, Layer Cake and The Constant Gardener, Leo Davis, alongside a group of esteemed film and arts journalists.
